Formative Assessments for Standards-Based Grading
When lesson planning, and considering what formative assessment to use with your students to measure their progress and/or check for understanding, ask yourself these 4 questions:
- What is my objective?
- What should my students be able to know/understand/do at the end of this lesson?
- What assessment will best measure if students are progressing toward standard/objective?
- Am I differentiating my assessment practices?

Collecting Data
Throughout any given week, formative data should be collected in your Gradebook so that you can accurately document students' progress. When collecting formative assessment data, please consider the following:
Data Collection Examples:
- Do I need to assess all students, a random sampling of students?
- How will this data inform my planning and instruction?
- What formative assessments will I document in Gradebook?
